Faith Hill Needs the Dixie Chicks Treatment...

June 25, 2007 11:33 PM

...and should be banned by country radio.  While I'm not surprised, here she is last week, giving a statement of protest in Toronto:

Faith Hill

I'm all about free speech, but I'm also all about not buying music from ignorant fools.  So let the free market do its work on Faith Hill.

Comments

I knew there was a reason I never liked her.

"Give the treatment"? Ooooooh, get the proverbial ball-bat out, Tony.

Did it break your country-music-lovin' heart to see Faith dissin' yo' man?

One guy's "ignorant fool" is several million other people's Grammy winner (not that a Grammy means there's any talent involved at all). But again, you probably listen to Toby Keith and spend your evenings at the Bill O'Blowhard alter....

Actually, the Dixie Chicks are one of mainstream country's (blaaahh) best bands. They actually can play. And they write a lot of their own songs.

"Mad As Hell" is a well-written song. It's got hook, and it's lyrically sensible.

Buy your music where you want, and "give the treatment" all you want. Hooray for you. I'm sure that'll work for you. But all it does is give more publicity to the people you censure.

The Dixie Chicks (and I dont buy their music, but I buy Steve Earle and Bruce Cockburn, if you really wanna get political) are more popular than ever, and the (mostly imagined) boycott's effect was to basically solidify their fan base and give the group longevity.

I thought the Dixie Chicks declared that they were no longer part of country music.

English teacher   ·  June 26, 2007 03:51 PM

But wouldn't that be a good thing?

Hey, mebbe they'll "give the treatment" to english teacher. Ohhh... wait, he's aleady got the State Teacher's Retirement Fund and the Union. He's already had "the treatment".

jackscrow   ·  June 26, 2007 04:03 PM

Jacksrow--

I don't understand your animosity to the free market. All I'm suggesting is that people should be aware of Faith Hill's political activism, so they can make appropriate decisions, if they choose to do so.

Re: the Dixie Chicks boycott, there were numerous press accounts about how their tour ticket sales plummeted, and so did their CD sales.

Re: the Chicks' grammys. The only reason they won is because Hollywood liberals liked their politics.

Sorry to disappoint you, Jackscrow, but I never belonged to the union. By the way, what does your statement have to do with the initial post?

In my opinion, Faith Hill is just trying to get publicity out of this stunt. After all, she has lost several awards to younger country musicians...and hasn't taken the loss so well. Didn't you blog about that a few months ago, NBS?

English teacher   ·  June 26, 2007 07:58 PM

Lessee, El Bruto. You suggested "the treatment". I said go ahead. No animosity to the free market from me... as long as it is a really free market. Any kind of trade. In an aside, the only way to have free trade is to abolish all tariffs, which ain't gonna happen.

English teacher. You are only the 2nd English Teacher I
have ever "met" that is not in the union. I take it you're home schooling, then? My reference to you already getting "the treatment" was a feeble attempt at a joke. So was the home schooling bit.

I could care less about Faith Hill. I do happen to agree with the sentiment expressed in the bumper sticker. We got jobbed. And we're still getting jobbed.

Do you really think that the Dixie Chicks would have gotten those Grammys without the attempt to boycott and the reaction by the voters? I win that point.

you say that you are for free speech, yet because Faith does not support that disaster called g.w.bush, you want her banned from country radio. typical neo-con line, suppress any viewpoint you do not like.

michael   ·  June 27, 2007 01:41 AM

I want market forces to get her off the radio. Her political activism is under-reported

Besides, in the photo, she's doing the exact same thing the Dixie Chicks did--criticize the president during a time of war while on foreign soil.

Nasty, Brutish and Short   ·  June 27, 2007 07:19 AM

I agree NBS. My next $14.99 plus tax will be spent on another artist. Heck, I just might" save up some cash" and buy a Southpark DVD instead!

Butters   ·  June 27, 2007 07:46 AM

That market forces argument is working pretty well on the Prez and Iraq, ain't it.

We're going down the path of every other "Empire" and you wanna spend time boycotting some bubble-headed pop star?

Wow. The Neo-Cons at their obfuscating best....

You bet I'm criticizing the Prez in a time of war. He and his cadre of big business buddies have screwed up so horribly that we will never again be the Nation we were.

He and his whole administration are incredibly, mind-numbingly incompetent.

He has let the “war on terror” (the initial intent of which was to wipe out any threats to us – the US) devolve into an almost unsolvable occupation.

jackscrow   ·  June 27, 2007 11:12 AM

Here. You might want to give this guy "the treatment".

jackscrow   ·  June 27, 2007 04:00 PM

Jacksrow--Randy Newman does NOT have a friend in me. He's already on my list.

Nasty, Brutish & Short   ·  June 27, 2007 05:56 PM

So, you gotta list. And that's no surprise.

Care to enlighten us with the plans you have for the people on your list?

jackscrow   ·  June 27, 2007 07:01 PM

Jacksrow--Well, I was thinking... there are rumors about sending the Gitmo detainees to the U.S. for trial. How about sending the music industry liberals to Gitmo? There will be plenty of space, once the terrorists leave. It'll be like a little leftist Margaritaville.

Nasty, Brutish & Short   ·  June 27, 2007 11:26 PM

Ummmmm... well, better weather than East Hampton, I suppose. Ok, as long as there's alcohol.

And will there be sidewalks and oak trees so Billy can still drive?

I should be grateful, I guess; that's a little better than the camps you guys sent us to the last time....

jackscrow   ·  June 28, 2007 07:29 AM

I'm sure we'll be able to take "showers".
