Nasty, Brutish & Short

I had high hopes for Fred, but the early reviews are not good.

From Ruth Marcus at the Washington Post:

After six months of Waiting for Thompson, the former Tennessee senator has arrived on stage. Unfortunately, Thompson's dialogue so far consists of folksy platitudes and broad pronouncements, unobjectionable yet unenlightening

"We do whatever's necessary, hitch up our britches and come out the other end," Thompson said during a campaign rally in Iowa.  He was talking national security, but, hey, a little britch-hitching can't hurt, whatever the issue.

Fred needs to bring out the substance.  Fast.  He also irritated too many people with his ridiculous announcement dance.

Comments

Consider the source- perhaps the Post is worried about a Thompson run and wants to spike its guns.

Careful, NBS. The last time I tried to comment that Fred hadn't been running a serious campaign and had been simply letting the rumor mill run his compaign for him, I was attacked pretty heavily. After all, he had made the effort to post a recording to You Tube attacking Michael Moore. Wow! If that doesn't say someone is seriously committed to a drive at the White House, I don't know what does!

The complaint that Fred has been running more on folksy cliche as opposed to conservative ideology is not lone to the speech referenced in your post nor the Washington Post. Unfortunately, I can't say that Fred has offered many fewer ideas than the other GOP candidates. That is why he is currently solidly in the race.

The Incredible Snow Job:

Fred Thompson reeks of integrity ... of "gravitas".

"The secret of success is sincerity. Once you can fake that you've got it made." - Jean Giraudoux

"... When hacks like Chris Matthews prattle on about authenticity, what they mean is the kind of authenticity Giraudoux was talking about. Someone able to fool enough of the people enough of the time to get over. The LAST thing they want is an authentic populist. Thompson fills the bill."

Fred not only has fake sincerity, he has that kind of dignified air that might actually be stupidity. Unfortunately it is mistaken for what is called "gravitas".

Why not something REAL -- why not RON PAUL?
